Learning & Teaching

St Bernadette's Primary School Ivanhoe

‘Creating lifelong learners with opportunity rich lives’

At St Bernadette's, our vision is to inspire lifelong learners who embrace knowledge, compassion, and leadership. We support the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) vision and approach to creating Flourishing Learners through evidence-based explicit instruction and active promotion of equity and excellence.

We create a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive. Our programs reflect the values of families and celebrates the diversity of our local communities. With an engaging and flexible curriculum, children are supported to realise their full potential.

Our Learning Goals:

Excellence: A knowledge-rich, evidence-based teaching and learning program

Our teachers implement evidence-based practices to deliver knowledge and nurture curiosity and critical thinking skills.  This equips our students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for lifelong learning and success.

Equity: Putting Students at the Heart

At our core, we believe in the dignity and worth of every student. We are dedicated to ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, achieve literacy and numeracy proficiency. Through a supportive and inclusive environment, we foster a sense of belonging and empower students to reach their full potential. Our goal is to cultivate not only academic success but also resilience, empathy, and a lifelong love of learning.

Inquiry based learning is an umbrella term that incorporates many current learning approaches including project based learning and design thinking. The students at St B’s are involved in the following characteristics that serve as hallmarks of inquiry based learning:

  • communicating, reflecting, collaborating, analysing and content.

  • genuine curiosity, wonderment and questioning.

  • student ‘voice’ is evident – elements of the curriculum / learning are negotiated and student questions are taken seriously and addressed.

  • prior knowledge is ascertained and built upon.

  • significant concepts and essential questions are identified which unify knowledge and understandings.

  • students are actively involved in constructing understandings through hands-on experiences, research, processing and communicating their understandings in various ways.

  • learning takes place in a social context – students learn from each other, together with others, and from those outside of the classroom context.

Core Curriculum

Using the Victorian Curriculum F-10 framework to guide us, we focus our core learning on Education in Faith, Literacy, Numeracy, and Student Well Being. These core subjects are complemented by Civics and Citizenship, and The Humanities.

Specialist Classes

In addition to our core curriculum we offer specialised classes designed to promote creativity, critical thinking and well-being. Current specialty classes include Mandarin, Visual Art, Performing Art, Science (STEM) and Physical Education.

Learning Diversity, Interventions and Extension

For many students, quality classroom instruction is all that is necessary to ensure that they achieve growth and progress; some of our students require either targeted support to help develop their skills in an area such as Reading or Mathematics, or the opportunity to be extended in these areas. Teacher expertise and the invaluable work of our Learning Support Officers intersect, in order to ensure that students receive the opportunities that they need. Opportunities to support or extend are offered as listed.

  • Reading Recovery for students who require one to one reading early intervention

  • Literacy Intervention for students who require extra support in all aspects of Literacy.

  • Personalised inquiry approach to learning to ensure 100% of students, including the most challenged to the highly able students, are supported

  • Extension groups in both English and Maths for students identified as highly able/gifted meet regularly to engage in hands-on activities catering for their level of learning

Monitoring Student Learning

At St Bernadette’s, we employ a variety of monitoring tools to identify and address student learning needs, ensuring that teaching is adapted as required. Assessment of learning development provides transparency and guidance for families, who are integral partners in their child's educational journey.

Partnership with Families

We prioritise open communication and collaboration with families to strengthen and enhance our students’ learning journeys. This partnership includes:

Regular Informal Conversations with Families: Ongoing informal discussions between teachers and families provide opportunities to share updates on student progress and address any questions or concerns.

Student Progress Reports (Terms 2 & 4): Detailed progress reports are issued twice a year, offering comprehensive insights into students' academic development and areas for growth.

Teacher and Family Conversations (Terms 1 & 2): Scheduled meetings throughout the year allow teachers and families to discuss students' achievements, challenges, and strategies for continued success. Extra meetings conducted as required.

Education in Faith

We view the spiritual, moral, social, emotional and intellectual development of our students as paramount. Through opportunities to engage in dialogue, students are encouraged to live in mission, becoming aware of the needs of those less fortunate than themselves both in the local area and in the world.

Curriculum

We follow the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) Religious Education guidelines to deliver a contemporary RE curriculum that supports children in their faith journey. We encourage our students to take action inspired by the Gospels, where the values of honesty, forgiveness, justice, compassion and equality are front of mind.

Sacraments

An integral part of our students' religious experience is the receiving of sacraments. All baptised Catholic students are invited to receive the following sacraments:

  • Year 3: Children may receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, marking important milestones in their faith formation.

  • Year 6: Students are invited to affirm their Baptismal promises through the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Social Justice and Community Engagement

Beyond classroom learning, St Bernadette’s encourages students to live out their faith through social justice projects and missions within the broader community.

Class and Whole School Masses

Class level and whole school Masses are held throughout the year along with daily class prayer.  Mass services and prayer offer an opportunity to celebrate as a community.

English

At St Bernadette’s, we believe that literacy is the cornerstone of a successful education. Our literacy program is designed to ignite every child's passion for reading and writing. Our dedicated teachers work collaboratively to implement pedagogical approaches that best support student learning, equipping our students to become active and informed members of their community. Using evidence-based methods encompassing the Science of Learning and whole school Daily Reviews, we aim for all students to experience success in literacy.

Speaking and Listening

We understand that effective communication is a key component of a well-rounded education. Students have multiple opportunities to practise and enhance their speaking and listening skills in a supportive environment from interactive discussions, group activities, role-plays and debating, storytelling and presentations.

Reading

We seek to develop a love of reading for our students. Teaching the fundamental knowledge and skills that underpin the English language such as oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, and vocabulary, including the use of Thrass to support spelling knowledge, fluency and comprehension enables our teachers to meet the needs of our students.

Writing

We are committed to nurturing young writers to express their thoughts and ideas with confidence and clarity. Through the exploration of different genres and text types, we aim to inspire a passion for writing. Utilising picture story books, modelled examples and picture prompts and an integrated curriculum as a basis for writing, students are encouraged to express their unique voices. Incorporating a combination of handwriting and the use of technology, students move through the planning, drafting and editing stages of writing, with the support of teachers enabling personalised feedback at each stage.

Numeracy

At St. Bernadette’s, the goal of our Mathematics program for Prep through Year 6 is to help students recognize Mathematics as an essential and relevant part of life, fostering their ability to work mathematically. We promote positive attitudes towards learning by enhancing students’ understanding and application of Mathematics, enabling them to become proficient problem solvers and appreciate the importance of Mathematics in society. We regularly use data to differentiate our Maths program, ensuring it meets the needs of all students. Through our daily Mathematics program, students will:

  • Develop a solid understanding of mathematical concepts, processes, and strategies, and the ability to use these in problem-solving.

  • Learn to apply their mathematical knowledge to analyse situations and solve real-life problems.

  • Acquire the language skills necessary for the effective communication of mathematical ideas and experiences.

Maths Extension Program

We run a Mathematics extension program for students identified as having a natural aptitude for applying mathematical concepts to problem-solving. This program includes junior, middle, and senior sessions, with children participating in weekly one-hour classes. The program focuses on enhancing students' problem-solving skills. Participants engage in the APSMO (Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads) and various other mathematical challenges to further develop their abilities.

Maths Support Program

Our Maths support program for Prep to Year 2 students provides additional help in learning and applying basic maths concepts. This program offers small group support tailored to the specific needs of each child. Students participate in these focused sessions once per week, allowing them to build a solid foundation in Mathematics.

Mandarin

At St. Bernadette's, our students learn Mandarin from Prep to Year 6. Through stories, songs, and interactive activities, they gain insight into Chinese culture and traditions. The curriculum begins with pinyin, which introduces Mandarin pronunciation using the English alphabet, and advances to learning Chinese characters.

Our program includes engaging in cultural activities to celebrate Chinese festivals and traditions. Every other year, we host Mandarin Day bringing our community together to explore China's rich heritage and promote cultural understanding.

For students eager to extend their learning, we offer a Mandarin Extension program where they can further develop their language skills in a supportive environment.

Performing Arts

St Bernadette's boasts a rigorous Performing Arts program aligned with the Victorian curriculum, offering students opportunities to express themselves through dance, drama, and music. Our 5/6 students have the chance to learn how to play the ukulele.

Every second year, the entire school comes together to perform a musical, featuring dancing, singing, and acting. Senior students take on lead roles, making it a highlight for both the students and the wider community. Our past productions include Madagascar Jr., Mary Poppins Jr., and Finding Nemo Jr.

In alternate years, students from Year 3-6 are invited to join the St Bernadette’s Show Choir, where they learn and perform dances and songs for the school and local community. Additionally, our end-of-year festivities feature a much-anticipated Christmas Choir and Christmas Play.

Private music lessons, provided by Melbourne Metro Music are available at St Bernadette’s.
