Learning mathematics creates opportunities for and enriches the lives of all Australians. It provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge. It develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built.

The Victorian Curriculum forms the basis of the Mathematics program at St. Bernadette’s as well as the strategies developed through the Success in Numeracy Education (SINE) initiative.

The Victorian Curriuclum for Mathematics  is organised around the interaction of three content strands and four proficiency strands. The content strands are Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. They describe what is to be taught and learnt.
The proficiency strands are Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving, and Reasoning.
Our Mathematics program is designed to maximise each students’ outcomes, ensuring that they develop confidence and competence in all areas of the mathematics curriculum so that they can meet the demands of school, further education, employment and everyday life.

Data is continually used to inform teachers’ planning and target students’ learning. St Bernadette’s employs a whole/small/whole approach during Mathematics sessions, providing focused teaching for all students. Students are involved in Mathematics through differentiated learning opportunities to ensure that individual needs are met. The Numeracy Support teacher provides extra support for students who require assistance, as well as support for students who require extension.
